Canadian Silver Dollars

The Royal Canadian Mint is the Crown Corporation which is in charge of the production of Canadian silver dollars and as such all the coins and currency notes in Canada. The first of the Canadian silver dollars to be issued as minted in 1935. The Canadian silver dollars of this category were meant to commemorate King George V's silver jubilee. It is one of the oldest commemorative coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint.

The design of these early silver dollars was done by Emanuel Hahn. One side of this coin depicted a voyageur sitting with a Canadian aborigine who is paddling a canoe. The Northern Lights are also depicted in the design through some faint lines. The Royal Canadian Mint used this design for as long as until 1986 making it one of the most longstanding designs in the coin issued by the mint in its category.

As of 2000 the Canadian silver dollar has been issued with different themes. Starting in the year 2004, the Canadian silver dollars were issued based on the theme, 'Voyage of Discovery' The coin was designed by D. F. Warkentin. Proof mintage of these silver dollars was 121,575 each available for $29.95. BU mintage of these Canadian silver dollars was 62,975 and each coin was available for $19.95.

In 2001, the Canadian silver dollars were issued based on two themes. The first was the Ntional Ballet of Canada's fiftieth anniversary and the second was 90th anniversary of first time that 1911 Canadian silver dollars were first struck.

The following year 2002 was the year that golden jubilee of the rule of Queen Elizabeth II was celebrated. The Royal Canadian Mint designed and issued a Canadian Silver dollar on this occasion. Proof mintage of these Canadian silver dollars was counted at 29,688. BU mintage of these coins was counted at 64,410. The proof dollars were available for $33.95 and Bu dollars were available for $24.95.

In the same year, the Queen Mother had also passed on in March, barely a month after passing of Princess Margaret in February. The Royal Canadian Mint issued proof silver dollars commemorating The Queen Mother. The coin was designed by the Royal Canadian Mint staff. Only 9994 Canadian silver dollars of this type were issued, each available for $49.95.

The Discovery of Cobalt was the theme for Canadian silver dollars in 2003. The following year another Canadian silver dollar was issued on the 400th anniversary of the first settlement of the French in North America. In 2005, another Canadian dollar silver was issued, this time because forty years had passed since the Canadian maple leaf flag was adopted. The theme of 2006 Canadian silver dollar was the Victoria Cross again designed by the staff of Royal Canadian Mint.

In 2007, the theme of Canadian silver dollars is Thayendanegea Joseph Brant.
